Mobile provision for The Ten Tors

Back in 1959 three army officers felt that Dartmoor would provide a challenge for civilians as well as soldiers and the Ten Tors Challenge was conceived.

Nearly fifty years later, some 2,500 individuals in 400 teams take part in the event. Participants compete to cover distances of up to 55 miles, between ten Tors, over the formidable Dartmoor terrain. The challenge is coordinated by 43 (Wessex) Brigade, in collaboration with contingents from across the Armed Services.

Cellhire plays a key role in ensuring the safety of participants, by providing 43 (Wessex) with a pool of GSM mobile handsets for the duration of the event. These phones are supplied as a contingency measure, and numbers are allocated up to six weeks in advance.

This means that the organisers can compile an accurate directory of participants, matched to the handsets they are subsequently allocated. This provision is a vital safety measure, as conditions on Dartmoor can quickly turn hazardous and the ability to retain communicate with participants is essential.
