The Customer - Embleton Hall Dairies

Embleton Hall is a thriving dairy products business, located in rural County Durham. The operation was set up in 1984, when the owner decided to process and package milk from his dairy herd. The initial venture has since expanded into a local community business, with neighbouring farmers also providing milk from their respective herds. Milk and yoghurts are now supplied to a large number of local supermarkets and independent retailers.

The company has a fleet of delivery drivers, none of whom had company mobiles. The drivers were reluctant to accept or return calls on their personal mobiles, which led to problems with delivery scheduling. If a customer called in to report part of a delivery missing, the only option open to Embleton Hall was to try and estimate where the driver would be en-route and make a call to the next anticipated drop-off point, asking them to return to the original customer and complete the order. This was clearly inefficient, but the company didn't want to commit to significant outlay on mobile communication. An additional complication was that network coverage could prove inconsistent in what is predominantly a rural county.

The Solution

Cellhire provided 11 Nokia handsets for the delivery drivers. The O2 network coverage was deemed to be the best in County Durham and the agreed tariff was extremely competitive. A base tariff of just £4.99 per handset per month, with all O2 to 02 calls free of charge, meant that the company was able to significantly improve the efficiency of their operation, for a fixed cost of less than £55 a month
